Hades Genderbend | Halloween ’18

“Ba-boom. The name’s Hades, Lord of the Dead. Hi, how ya doing?”

Happy Halloween, my little ghosts and goblins! I hope you all are having an amazing Halloween, and that you eat all the yummy treats your little tummies can hold!

What an amazing holiday it’s been already! This past Friday, I got to go to a party with some friends, and we had a great time with tons of food and an incredibly long game of Betrayal at House on the Hill which ended with me being the betrayer. It was so nice to hang out with them and the costumes were super great! My friend Kayla was a stick of cotton candy, and her costume was so big, she couldn’t fit in her own kitchen! It was pretty fantastic.

I have to be honest, I’ve been planning this Disney Gender-bend for quite a while now, back when my hair was blue (last November!) I was already thinking about my costume and how I wanted to utilize the blue hair. While my hair ended up changing colors a couple times since last fall and now, I still knew I wanted to do blue hair, and had been thinking of doing something Disney for a long while. I finally decided on Hades, Lord of the Dead,  from Hercules, and turned it from a male costume to a female costume.

The wig, dress, and body paint are from Amazon, and turned out exactly like I hoped! I wanted a dress that was versatile enough that I could tie it on one shoulder or change up the style if I wanted. I decided on this black wrap dress, that was pretty cheap compared to the other dresses I had been looking at. The wig I was a little worried about since I didn’t want it looking too fakey or trashy. This one turned out so great, which I ordered in “Water Blue” and while it got a little tangled after all the use, it came nice and silky without having that plastic-shine. For a temporary cosplay wig, it did exactly what I wanted it to. I styled the top to give it some volume, and set it with bobby pins and hair spray.

The body paint was something I was a little worried about, and ended up doing a bunch of research before purchasing the Snazaroo brand body paint, in the color “Light Grey”. I wanted something that wasn’t going to smudge or smear, or come off on clothing. I also didn’t want something that would take forever to get off my skin, or leave my skin stained. I decided on Snazaroo because they had some awesome reviews, and was water soluble so would wash off easily with water and a little soap. I had Cheshire help me put this stuff on my back, and coated my arms, sides, chest, neck, and face myself. It took a little work to find the best system for applying (which was literally to get my fingers wet, smoosh it around in the container, and apply in circular motions until the stuff became slightly tacky. Worked great and dried quickly.)

The contacts I got through UNIQSO, which has an excellent selection of cosplay contacts in a huge variety of colors. It took me quite a long time to master putting in contacts for the first time, but once I got the hang of it, it was pretty simple. It ended up being a lot of me telling myself “Hannah, you can totally do this. Hundreds…no, thousands….no, millions of people do this every single day!! You can do this!!” I guess the hype talk worked, because I finally got them in and didn’t stab myself in the eye-socket. The skull for the skull pin I found in a package at Target that had both medium and small sized skulls. I originally was going to make earrings to go with the pin, but ran out of time.

This really was an awesome project, and makes me wish that Halloween came more than once a year to give me a chance to dress up. Alas, it looks like I’ll just have to find more reasons to create awesome costumes. Just for funzies.
